Uses of the Cases

This table (adapted from Kennedy’s Latin Primer) provides a basic overview of how to translate each of the cases.

Nominative servus currit The slave runs subject
Vocative serve! O slave! address
Accusative servum video I see the slave object
Genitive servi liber The book of the slave description
Dative servo librum dedi I gave a book to the slave receiver
Ablative servo clamor venit The noise came from the slave source
