Comparative Adjectives
There are multiple ways to translate a comparative adjective from Latin into English, for example:
| laetior | happier |
| more happy | |
| quite happy | |
| too happy |
Only the first two translations need to be learned for the GCSE Latin Language paper. They are followed by quam or the ablative of comparison, e.g.
| puella fortior quam puer est. |
| The girl is braver than the boy. |
| pax crudelior bello esse potest. |
| Peace can be crueller than war. |
The comparative adjective declines according to the 3rd Declension pattern. The m./f. nominative singular is the stem. Note the neuter nom./acc. singular ends in -ius.
Both types of adjective (2-1-2 and 3rd Declension) form their comparatives in the same way (stem + –ior).
